Oregon Roleplayers for Charity

Hello, I am writing to you in order to get the word out on an upcoming RPG related charity event. On December 13th we are holding an event to benefit Start Making a Reader Today (SMART). This event will be held at Guardian Games. The idea is simple really, we are hosting RPG games from 10:30am until 10pm and in order to play in any of the games you just need to make a donation to SMART ($5 suggested minimum). We do still have table space for anyone interested in running a game. For additional information about the event please visit us at the Portland Dungeon''s and Dragon''s meetup groups forum located at http://www.meetup.com/dnd-820/messages/boards/forum/896499 . This is the section of the forum dedicated to this charity event.
Anima Tactics Tournament - KFG - Sept 14th @ 12:30

First Tournament Report:

Player - Army

1st - Nick - Wissenschaft

2nd - Aaron (crazybones) - Light

3rd - Erik Ause - Light

Aaron (last_bullet) - Samael

Alex - Dark

Zach - Light

Seth - Neutral

Hunter - Wissenschaft

I was thrilled with the opening event. We had 8 people show which is a respectable turnout for a new game. I wouldn''t mind getting the number up a higher, but hey. Gotta start somewhere.

Tournament held 09/14/08 @ Knightfall Games in Beaverton, Or (USA)

Format: [I wanted a format that would allow players to play, but to make sure rules questions didn''t impact the overall outcome. Mainly because I''m no master of the rules yet. In some cases I wasn''t even close]

Attrition - last figure standing

Notes: Works for learning the rules. Scenario events are in the very near future.

I went for 10 rounds per match. Each person was ensured they''d get an equal number of turns to play.

Notes: This worked out well with most games ending before hitting the 10th round, but some went the distance.

The winner was determined by the number of models left alive. I found this in the rule book and decided to stay with the official approach.

Note: This is an interesting dynamic and something totally new. Most games go with who killed the most stuff. My feelings are mixed on this approach and I''ll have to run a few more events and get player feedback before I make up my mind.

Three round

Notes: After three rounds we had two undefeated players. The overall winner ended up being the one with most points alive from all three matches.

Commentary: I was pleased with the format of the first event.

How many points alive vs. how many points killed - this would probably be the biggest question coming out of the whole thing. Which is better? Is on better than the other?

As it stands I plan to stick with points still alive.

I know there are a few ways to deal with two people with identical records, but I all about keeping it simple. So what ever format is used to calculate the winner of matches will be how I break those ties IF the number of rounds won''t lead to a clear winner.

First thanks to Chris for hosting the event at Knightfall Games

Also, thanks Joel and Kai for stopping in. They brought additional prize support and hung out showing some of the AT new hotness.

Talk to me in 6 months I am sure I will have changed my mind.

Favorite Warlock/Warcaster?

Allister Caine is still my favorite Warcaster. Grim Angus is a close second.

Favorite aspect of the hobby?

The socialization. I enjoy getting to hangout with friends to just play and have fun. Tournies are great, but the real fun in this game is just throwing dice and having a good time.

What advice would you give new players to keep them from getting discouraged?

Be patient and have fun. If you aren''t having fun, you might as well not play. Losing and winning is all part of the game. Remember your loses, and savor your wins.

Local Tournament Scene - March

Tournament Date: 03-25-07
Venue: Rainy Day Games
Format: Hordes 350pts Mangled Meat Assassination
Turnout: 9

Overall Winner: Aaron (Crazybones)

Best in Faction:
Circle: Aaron (Crazybones) out of 1
Legion: Andy (odit) out of 1
Skorne: Marshall (brownhornet) out of 2
Trolls: Greg (TempleOfSul) out of 5

Interview with Overall Winner and Circle Best in Faction:

How long have you been playing (Hordes/WarMachine)?

I have been playing Warmachine for around 2 1/2 years now. Hordes, i have been playing since the game hit the shelves.

What caster do you most dread sitting across the table from?

Warcaster - Honestly, I hate playing against the Old Witch. Her ability to throw up cover is brutal. Beating Khador is often achieved by softening them up on their way in, so she can seriously make your life hell. Her feat is also nasty, especially because she can center it on Scrapjack. I always find her a challenging warcaster to play against.

Warlock - I haven''t played against all of them yet, but at this point i am going to have to say Thagrosh. Not because he is over powering, but because nothing is more disheartening than killing a Carnivean just to see it reappear the next turn. A POW 15 aoe 4 offensive spell is also sick and wrong.

How many tournament coins/metals do you have?

I own a lonely Circle coin. Today wasn''t a coin tournament but being able to get the cold stamped cards is pretty damn cool. I don''t get out to tournaments often. I play mostly within a group of friends.

Favorite Warlock/Warcaster?

Baldur - His ability to shape the battlefield and fight on his own terms really makes him fun to play. He is very versatile warlock. He can hit hard, has a good array of spells for both buffing and offensive and he can even assisinate with Forest Walk. A lot of fun toys to play with.

Fully painted?

Ya right! Not even sure what that means....can you rephrase the question? :)

The ability to apply exactly as much force where and when you need it, is worth the risk of a frenzied beast to me.

- What other factions do you play?

Cygnar, Mercs.

- Favorite Warlock/Warcaster?

hmm hard one, my flavor of the month is Ecaine, but I play Stryker and Darius more then any other.

- Fully painted?

I wish! I can play a fully painted it would just be a lot of jacks, and a select couple of infintry units..

- Favorite aspect of the hobby?

Escapism, I don''t have to focus on the rest of my life while trying to play, I focus on how to get my ass out of the sling it is currently in..

Congrats to Mike on a hard fought victory.
In Cryx I like them all pretty much the same, with perhaps Epic Skarre edging out everyone.

What caster do you most dread setting across the table from?

Ye Olde standard Haley. I despise Temporal Barrier with a hatred so cold it burns.

How many tournament coins/metals do you have?

Medals:
Khador: 3
Cryx: 1
Crazy Large PAX Invitational Champion Medal: 1

Coins:
Overall:5
Khador: 1
Cryx: 4
Trolls: 1

Thanks Carl and Congratulations on your impressive victory.

G.I. Joe Advances on your sister.....

Shock and awe tactics highly effective in delicate mission.

G.I. Joe celebrated victory Friday after seizing your sister''s Seinna mountain territory. Such erogenous zones are held by your sister''s boyfriend and are normally considered "no fly zones" by Joe. The decision to move in was made after reconnaissance by Corporal Alpine revealed tank-topped peaks with no visible support.

"They were ripe for grabbing," said General Clayton "Hawk" Abernathy. "We knew we''d have to move quickly before your sister had time to mount defenses." Intelligence operative Lady Jaye was sent as an advance agent to sow popular reception........
